Rain Poetry engages children from across Pennsylvania in a hands-on community poetry activity facilitated by local poets and teaching artists. This innovative project started in Philadelphia in 2023, involving elementary school students from five neighborhoods who learned about haiku and wrote their own poems. Selected haikus were installed on the ground in public spaces, including neighborhood parks and libraries, using a special rain-activated solution that makes the poetry appear like magic by adding just some water! The beauty of rain poetry is that young people explore their voices and express themselves through poetry while also transforming everyday spaces into opportunities to engage with the humanities and foster learning and conversation. Each installation has its own community reveal celebration, inviting families, friends, and neighbors to connect and celebrate the work of young people.
The theme for our Rain Poetry project is Colors of Kane. Students are invited to write original haiku poems that capture what makes Kane a vibrant and meaningful place. “Colors” can be interpreted both literally (such as the greens of the forest, the reds of brick buildings, or the gold of autumn) and figuratively (including the emotions, memories, people, and experiences that bring our community to life). Through this theme, students are encouraged to reflect on their personal connection to Kane and express it through vivid imagery and concise, meaningful language. Each haiku should capture a small moment, feeling, or image that represents the spirit of our town. Selected poems will become part of our Rain Poetry Haiku Trail appearing on sidewalks throughout Kane when it rains. This project offers students a unique opportunity to see their words transformed into public art, celebrating both creativity and community in a lasting and meaningful way.
