New StoryWalk® Installation at Evergreen Park Invites Families to Read on the Walk
Evergreen Park has unveiled its newest StoryWalk® installation, inviting community members of all ages to combine outdoor recreation with childhood literacy. Located along the park's walking path, the trail now features laminated pages from a children's picture book displayed on posts, allowing readers to follow the story step-by-step as they stroll through the park.
“One Un-Sunny Day”, the new story on our Storywalk trail is a children's picture book written by Taylor Peek and illustrated by Olga Sall. The story begins on what was supposed to be the perfect first day of summer. When a sudden thunderstorm washes away all outdoor plans, a young boy named Buddy and his expressive, unimpressed cat, Chubbs, find themselves stuck inside dealing with disappointment and big feelings.
Rather than letting the gray weather ruin the day, Buddy uses his imagination to "make his own sunshine". Together, Buddy and Chubbs transform ordinary household items into extraordinary adventures—turning laundry baskets into pirate ships, navigating dark caves, climbing snowy mountains of clothes, and painting artwork studios in the living room. The story emphasizes themes of resilience, emotional regulation, creativity, and turning a ruined day into an exciting adventure.
In the Storybook Walk Edition, the story panels are paired with interactive physical activity prompts and search-and-find challenges that keep young readers moving and engaged as they follow the path.
A StoryWalk® is an innovative, interactive way for children and adults to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time. Created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont, and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library, the initiative places pages of a dismantled children's book in display cases positioned sequentially along a public walking route. As families move from post to post, children are encouraged to engage with the story through reading aloud, discussing the illustrations, and completing physical activity prompts along the way.
